Breadth
This is the breadth section of my AP 2-D Design portfolio. It consists of 12 pieces that show off a variety of skills, techniques, mediums I am able to use.
Concentration
This is the concentration section of my 2-D Design Portfolio. This section consists of 12 pieces that focus on a single theme, motif, idea, etc. of my choosing.
I focused my concentration on these traditional Korean playing cards often used to play a game called hwatu. They are often played during New Years with family, and I explored the images of the cards in a surrealistic and whimsical way by having the images in the cards come to life. For example, in images 1 and 2, the more realistic versions of the flowers and leaves connected to the flat images of them in the cards, flowing out of them. As the series continued on, I incorporated bits of myself into the pieces such as my hands while I continued to imitate the same idea of the images in the cards coming to life. Eventually, I included more parts of myself such as my eyes, lips, nose, hair, and then myself wearing a traditional dress worn on New Years called a hanbok. By increasingly combining more parts of my physical appearance regarding my face and body along with the imaginary portrayals of the cards and also frequently incorporating bright colors and blue skies in the background, I feel I was able to express the appreciation and pride I have in my Korean culture and self-identity, something that has not always been there for me as I was growing up. As I worked on this series more and more over time, I feel I was able to explore my heritage more freely and growingly embrace it and myself as well.
Quality
